1 dead, officer injured in Mesa car accident

PHOENIX — A police officer has been taken to the hospital in serious condition Tuesday after a car accident in Mesa that killed one person.
Officer Helen Simmons, a 23-year veteran, was airlifted to Scottsdale Memorial Osborn Hospital suffering from non life-threatening internal injuries.
The accident occurred at 80th and Main streets when the officer’s vehicle T-boned a van. The elderly driver of the van was attempting to cross Main and was ejected on impact.
