Loughner returns to Arizona for sentencing hearing

TUCSON, Ariz. — The man who pleaded guilty in the Tucson shooting rampage
that wounded former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has returned to Arizona to be
sentenced.

The U.S. Marshals Service says Jared Lee Loughner was brought to Tucson on
Monday from a Missouri prison facility where he has been undergoing
psychological treatment.

Jared Lee Loughner is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court in Tucson on
Thursday.

Loughner pleaded guilty in early August to 19 counts under a plea agreement
that guarantees he will spend the rest of his life in prison and makes him
ineligible for parole.

Six people were killed and Giffords and 12 others were wounded in the January
2011 attack.

Loughner’s plea was welcomed by some victims who saw the agreement as a way to
avoid a lengthy trial.
