Stay of execution denied for Arizona inmate

PHOENIX – The Arizona Supreme Court has denied a last-ditch appeal from
lawyers for an Arizona death row inmate to block his scheduled execution
Wednesday.

The appeal filed late Monday on behalf of Daniel Cook and other death-row
inmates asked the state high court to rule that the state’s injection law is
unconstitutional. Lower courts have ruled otherwise.

The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon denied Cook’s request for a
stay.

Cook still has an appeal pending with the U.S. Supreme Court based on a claim
of ineffective legal representation early in his appeal process.

Cook was sentenced to die for the 1987 strangulation murders in Lake Havasu
City of 26-year-old Carlos Cruz-Ramos and 16-year-old Kevin Swaney.
