PHOENIX (AP) — Officials are opening the main road into the community of
Crown King for a few hours after a mudslide forced its closure a day ago.
But the Arizona
Republic reports that Yavapai County officials are not allowing in
drivers from Interstate 17 on Sunday. Crown King Road will shut down again
on Monday morning.
Crews are removing debris and boulders after thunderstorms in the area
Saturday caused the mudslide.
The closure of the main road off I-17 stranded residents and tourists in the
small tourist town as up to six inches of rain fell over the weekend.
The area has become vulnerable to mudslides after a large wildfire in May
burned trees and other vegetation that normally prevent rocks from falling
onto the road during bad weather.
