July 2, 2012

It was Sunday, April 22nd, 2012 at about 4:30 a.m. when 82-year-old Nancy Newton woke to use the bathroom.

“She left the bedroom and then literally walked into this burglar,” said Phoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch.

Newton surprised the man, who had broken into her house near 28th Street and Thomas.

“She screamed and he began beating her so badly that her spine was fractured,” said Burch. “She ultimately died of her injuries.”

Unfortunately, Newton wasn’t able to provide a good description of the suspect before she died.

Our next case happened at about 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 16th, 2012.

A cab driver was flagged down by a guy at the AMPM at 12th street and Northern.

“The suspect told the driver he wanted to go to 30th street and Oak,” said Burch. “On the way, he took a knife and held it to the driver’s throat, demanding his money and cell phone.”

The suspect took the money and cell phone and fled on foot. The taxi driver wasn’t hurt.
