A bio box for Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio

AGE: 56. Born in Cincinnati, Dec. 19, 1955.

EDUCATION: B.A., Dartmouth College, 1979; J.D., University of Michigan School of Law, 1984.

EXPERIENCE: U.S. Senate, 2011-present; director, White House Office of Management and Budget, 2006-07; U.S. trade representative under President George W. Bush, 2005; U.S. House, 1993-2005; deputy assistant and director, Office of Legislative Affairs, White House, 1989-91; associate counsel to President George H.W. Bush, 1989.

FAMILY: Wife, Jane, three children.

RELIGION: Methodist (changed from Presbyterian after marriage).

ON THE NIGHTSTAND: Robert Caro's second Lyndon B. Johnson book, "Means of Ascent," and John F. Kennedy's "Profiles in Courage." Favors books about politics and history, particularly those about two of his favorite presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.

RECENT MOVIE SEEN: "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen"; often watches Westerns on cable TV; favorite actors are Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall.

MUSIC: Eclectic; favored the Beatles and Grateful Dead in younger days, now more into country music; Rodney Atkins a current favorite.

HOBBIES: Kayaking, biking, hunting.

FUN FACT: Portman and his family own the Golden Lamb, an inn and restaurant in Lebanon, Ohio, that dates to 1803 and has hosted 12 U.S. presidents.
