Bruce's top 10 films of 2012

Here are my top 10 films for 2012.

And they're even in order for you!

10. "The Raid Redemption"<br>Whoa. Non-stop butt-whipping action in what reminded me of a video game come to life. Complete missions, clear levels and try not to die in the process. Awesome martial arts combined with plenty of gun play. Few people walk away. What action movies like "The Expendables" wish they could become.<br>(AP Photo)

9. "Safety Not Guaranteed"<br>Not what I was expecting! Sweet, funny and very quirky. This movie does a great job of avoiding the obvious jokes and plot lines and really let a story of time travel unfold in a very plausible way. Secondly, I got the sense that this could be a "coming out film" for the stars as they shine bright on the big screen. The best "small" film of the year.<br>(AP Photo)

8. "Wreck-It Ralph"<br>By far my favorite animated film of the year. I always wondered what happened inside an arcade after the lights went out, and now I know! I think this works because adults will identify with the "old school" video game stars of their youth and kids will love the new characters and story. Fun for everyone.<br>(AP Photo)

7. "The Hunger Games"<br>I walked into the theater knowing next to nothing about the story since I haven't read the books. Wow, I think I may need to go back and read them now! The Hunger Games are a competition/reality show where 24 kids are forced to fight to the death with only one child walking out alive. There is violence in this movie and kids do die, but thankfully the violence is what I'd call "TV violence." I really liked this and didn't notice it was almost 2.5 hours long. We will look back on this and say "I remember the first time I saw Jennifer Lawrence…"<br>(AP Photo)

6. "Lincoln"<br>As a work of art, it's done almost perfectly and ,as far as I can tell, it is historically accurate. Daniel Day-Lewis captures the essence of Lincoln and the glimpse into how politics and Washington works is eye opening to say the least. Still, it is a bit dry, pretty long and full of speeches and silent close-ups. If you think you are going to see a Civil War/Lincoln action flick, you'll be left longing. I predict this will be shown in every high school history class starting next year, and it should be!<br>(AP Photo)

5. "Life of Pi"<br>This movie looks stunning (especially in 3D) and for someone who hadn't read the book (or even knew the story) I was glued to the screen for all two hours. Keep in mind, there are some intense scenes with implied violence that may scare kids (and some adults) but the ride is so worth it. And get ready for the discussion afterwards about exactly what you just saw.<br>(AP Photo)

4. "Argo"<br>As close to perfect as a film can get. Brilliant performances, amazing story and it runs you through every emotion without coming across forced. And you will swear you are back in 1979. It almost looks like a documentary it is so realistic. Get ready for a ton of awards to come this movie's way, all of them well deserved.<br>(AP Photo)

3. "Zero Dark Thirty"<br>This won't open in Phoenix until January, but it counts as a 2012 release. A phenomenal telling of the years of intelligence work that went into the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Largely centered around the one CIA agent who never gave up and chased down one lead after another until the final successful raid. As apolitical as the story can be told that neither celebrates nor demonizes the tough choices many had to make. A must see.<br>(AP Photo)

2. "Silver Linings Playbook"<br>A very special film. The story is almost as crazy as the characters in it. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad and sometimes tough to watch people struggle with their inner demons and search for their path in life. Cooper and Lawrence are brilliant and prove that they will be around doing meaningful work for a long time to come. <br>(AP Photo)

1. "Moonrise Kingdom"<br>I admit to being a Wes Anderson fan ("Bottlerocket," "Rushmore," etc) and this may be his best work yet. Sure it's odd in places, but this is a compelling story with brilliant performances. And unlike some of his other films, this is a bit easier to follow and enjoy. You'll notice the big stars and the do great, but the young actors steal every scene and I dare you not to fall in love with Sam!<br>(AP Photo)

I've heard a positive comment or two about Searching for Sugar Man. I haven't seen it myself, but I'm not one to pass up a good documentary. It's even coming to a screen here in Tempe starting Friday!
